Frequently Asked Questions

Listed below are some answers to common questions about counselling and psychotherapy. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will be happy to respond.

Will my sessions be confidential?
Absolutely. Your confidentiality is very important to me and will be maintained throughout our work together, unless I feel concerned about your own or someone else’s safety. In this case I will still endeavour, where possible to discuss this with you first, before contacting your GP or emergency services.
Like most counsellors, in order to optimise ethical practice, I discuss my work with an experienced clinical supervisor who is bound by the same confidentiality as me.
If you have further questions or concerns with regard to confidentiality, please feel free to discuss these with me.

How often do sessions take place?
Weekly sessions have been shown to be most effective. Your sessions are likely to be on the same day and at the same time each week.
If your work schedule prevents you from coming regularly, please discuss this with me so that I can try and find an alternative solution for you, if possible.

How many sessions will I need to achieve what I want?
I offer short- or long-term counselling, depending on each client’s preference.
You may be generally happy with your life but have a specific concern, such as the illness or death of a loved one, or an anxiety about an upcoming event. In which case, attending sessions for a shorter period of time would probably suit you best.
However, if you would like to explore elements of your life or relationships more deeply – exploring your past, as well as your current life and your hopes for the future – then longer-term work would probably be more suitable for you.
Where relevant, both short and long-term counselling may look at your relational patterns, habits and beliefs that may be contributing to your reason for seeking counselling.

I'm not used to talking about my emotions. Is there any point in booking an appointment if I find it hard to talk about my problems?
Yes, there is. Talking to a qualified therapist is very different from talking to someone you know in that they will have been trained to help you feel comfortable in a non-judgemental, confidential and safe environment. Sessions will be tailored to your own pace so that you can feel comfortable.

    What is your therapeutic approach?
I have been trained as an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist which allows me to tailor sessions to each client’s needs. I may incorporate any of the following:
    Counselling
    Psychotherapy
    Guided visualisations/hypnotherapy
    CBT
    Mindfulness
    Assertiveness training
Techniques to help with regulating/controlling emotions such as anger and anxiety
    Attachment work
    Parts work/Internal Family Systems

How can I pay for my sessions?
Most clients find it easiest to pay by bank transfer before each session, however you are welcome to also pay be cash or PayPal.

    Do you offer discounted sessions?
I offer a limited number of discounted sessions. If necessary, please enquire whether these sessions are currently available.
