FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Clients often arrive with similar questions about what to expect from their sessions, or with common misconceptions about hypnotherapy and trance states. Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is simply an altered state of consciousness that we have all experienced in our daily lives.
Have you ever found yourself at the cinema, so engrossed in a film that you didn’t really notice what else was going on around you?
Ever driven a familiar route from A to B and arrived without any recollection of the journey?
Do you daydream or remember doing so as a child?
All these are familiar examples of altered states of awareness.

WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?
Hypnotherapy is the technique of enhancing the above-mentioned hypnotic states to create a wonderfully pleasant state of relaxation and to communicate directly with both the conscious and unconscious parts of your mind to help you find solutions and attain your goals.
In order to do this, a light or medium level of trance is usually achieved by calming both mind and body. In this state the brain produces alpha waves as the body gradually relaxes.
You may become aware of this tranquil process as you go into the alpha state, which is similar to meditation and allows the mind to become more receptive, ultimately empowering you to make optimal change for the better.

WHAT IS COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL HYPNOTHERAPY?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been developed from the principles of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) and, as its name suggests, incorporates both cognitive (thought) and behavioural approaches to help clients in altering and controlling their emotional states and changing disruptive or dysfunctional cognitive, behavioural and emotional patterns.
Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy incorporates the use of hypnotherapy within a CBT session for deeper, longer-lasting results.
During the session, we will explore and uncover each client's individual beliefs (personal rules, attitudes and expectations) that lead to their emotional disturbance.
Behavioural work will help to reinforce newly adopted attitudes and belief patterns.

WHO CAN BE HYPNOTISED?
As mentioned above, we all experience altered states of awareness many times a day so these actually come very naturally to us. The following statistics apply only to people who actually want to be hypnotised.
90% of people can achieve a light trance state.
Between 70-90% of those who go into a light trance will be able to achieve a medium-depth of trance.
Between 10-15% of those who go into a light trance will be able to achieve a deep trance.

CAN I BE MADE TO DO THINGS I DON'T WANT TO DO?
The simple answer to this questions is NO.
The conscious and unconscious parts of your mind will not allow you to accept suggestions that they consider to be harmful to you.
I like to describe the relationship with my clients as one resembling that of car driver (the client) and their navigator (myself). The navigator suggests directions to the driver, but the driver is in full control of the car and chooses whether to take the navigator's suggestions on board or not.
We have all seen stage hypnotists supposedly control people against their will but what they don't reveal is that all those on stage have been carefully vetted for their suggestibility and exhibitionism. They want to partake in the show and will do anything to remain part of the act. As soon as they question any suggestions given they are removed from the stage.

WHAT ABOUT THE STAGE HYPNOTISTS I'VE SEEN ON TV?
This is probably the question I am asked most frequently by new clients.
People chosen for staged hypnosis shows have been tested, together with the rest of the audience, for suggestibility and exhibitionism. Only those who volunteer and will obviously 'play along' are chosen. If they stop responding to suggestions they are removed from the stage.
If we apply these facts to a professional hypnotherapy session it shows us that
• 90% of clients will be hypnotised, but only because they have chosen to
• Clients will only go into as deep a trance as is appropriate to them
• They will be able to choose which suggestions they take on board

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
Sessions are personally tailored to each individual client and my aim is to empower those clients to help themselves, even after leaving therapy.
The average number of sessions per client is between 3-6, however it is impossible to give a definite answer. I usually review the situation with my clients in the 4th session (if there is one).
I teach effective Self-Hypnosis free of charge. Practising this wonderful skill enables rapid long-lasting achievement of desired results.
Smoking cessation is achieved in one session with an optional discounted top-up session if the client feels they need one.
